hock: see wine wine, alcoholic beverage made by the fermentation of the juice of the grape. So ancient that its origin is unknown, wine is mentioned in early Egyptian inscriptions and in the literature of many lands.

Among other sought after features in the goats are a long and straight tail, a long bottom jaw, long ears and straight hocks.
But I do believe it's safe to say that bows with straight hock travel are more forgiving and easier to tune than bows with violent up and-down nock travel.
