Strelitzia

(bird-of-paradise flowers), a genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the family Strelitziaceae, which is closely related to the family Musaceae. The long-petioled leaves are distichous. The flowers, which are in spicate inflorescences, are trimerous, irregular, and brightly colored. There are five species, distributed in southern Africa. S. reginae, whose perianth has orange and light blue lobes, is cultivated for cut flowers in greenhouses. The species S. nicolai and S. augusta are raised in botanical gardens.
