| Nucleotide sequencing identified two distinct gene cassettes, namely, the sat-1 and aadA genes, which code for streptothricin acetyl transferase, and aminoglycosede adenyltransferase, respectively (Figure 5). The normally harmless bacteria, which serve as an indicator of fecal contamination, were resistant to five common antibiotics: chloramphenicol, erythromycin, streptornycin, streptothricin, and kanamycin. |
