stripe phase [′strīp ‚fāz] (solid-state physics) A phase exhibited by the electrons in certain solid systems, such as doped antiferomagnets and quantum Hall systems, in which the behavior of the electrons is similar to that of the molecules in a liquid crystal, exhibiting properties of both a crystal (orientational order and anisotropy) and a liquid (absence of space periodicity). Also known as stripe. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |
