Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Stripes

broad bands of colored cloth (the color depending on the combat arm) sewn on pants along the side seams, adopted in almost all armies.

In the Soviet armed forces stripes have been instituted for uniforms of marshals, generals, and students of the Suvorov schools. All servicemen in cossack units also wore stripes. Stripes have also been instituted for high officials in some civilian ministries, such as the office of the procurator, the railroad, and the customs services.
