suffix A designation added to the end of a name. For example, ".com" is the suffix added to commercial domain names on the Internet. See TLD and Internet domain name.Suffix an affix added to the root of a word. Depending on their function, suffixes are derivational (word-forming) or relational (form-building). In inflected languages, the relational suffix at the end of a word form is called the inflection, or ending. A word may contain several suffixes of both types. For example, the Russian adjective chita-tel’-sk-ii (“reader’s”) has two derivational suffixes (-tel’- and -sk-) and one relational suffix (-ii). Derivational suffixes are classified according to their lexical meaning; relational suffixes are classified according to their grammatical meaning. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
