Clethra

a genus of evergreen and deciduous trees or shrubs of the family Clethraceae. The leaves are entire and alternate. The blossoms are five-membered. There are about 30 species, distributed in North and South America, South and East Asia, on the Canary Islands, and on the island of Madeira. Species of Clethra are ornamental; C. alnifolia and C. acuminata are cultivated in the USSR. The lily-of-the-valley tree (C. arborea ), a low evergreen with oblanceolate leaves and racemes of fragrant white flowers that resemble the flowers of lily of the valley (hence the name), is cultivated in greenhouses and grows wild on Madeira.
