(organic chemistry)
An enzymatic antioxidant that removes the potentially toxic superoxide ion (O2-) by disproportionating it to O2and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).

Tower and his team had noticed that overexpression of the enzyme, known as superoxide dismutase (SOD), boosted the activity level of fruit flies and even increased the life span of certain genetically engineered strains.
This system was found to produce superoxide as well as hydroxyl radicals.
Superoxide molecules are not highly toxic, but they can, over time, cause DNA degeneration.
