When Iverson is not busy catering to guests' needs or doing maintenance on lodge facilities, he kayaks over to nearby Little Tutka Bay, where he is refurbishing Widgeon, an old World War II supply ship that ran cargo to the Aleutian Islands. Because of political problems with Spain, the supply ship was late in returning. After his return to England, disaster strikes when an important supply ship, part of a fleet of nine, is lost at sea; the remaining passengers, including women and children, land on shore to find not a refuge but a settlement in shambles, with only a sixteen-day food supply. |
