Surface Gauge
a tool used in laying out. In metalworking, surface gauges are used to scribe lines, to transfer measurements from a ruler to a billet, and to measure linear dimensions. Surface gauges have a stand with a clamp, in which a scriber is held. More rapid marking and increased precision are achieved by using a height gauge. In carpentry, surface gauges are used in the form of a block with two parallel bars that have a scriber on one end for scribing lines parallel to the edge. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
