| In the case of the synthetic fibre industry, the Chemical Fibre Consultative Group -- comprised of representatives from MITI, companies, industrial associations and academic scholars -- drew up the guidelines for the introduction of and capacity expansion for major new products. One was the economic slump in South-East Asia, which led to currency devaluation by a number of countries and cheaper exports of synthetic fibres. At the forefront of this change has been the development of synthetic fibres and modern types of rope construction. |
