1. Music a piece of wood to which the strings of a violin, etc., are attached at their lower end. It is suspended between the taut strings and the bottom of the violin by a piece of gut or metal
2. Architect a short beam or rafter that has one end embedded in a wall

1. A short beam, joist, or rafter, which is supported by a header joist at one end and a wall at the other; also called a tail beam or tail joist.
2. An extension to centering, where there is a projection from an impost; can be removed easily.
3. A lookout.
4. A pipe tee used with a sink drain.

Tailpiece 

an ornamental graphic composition that concludes and decorates a book or portion of the text. In old and in some modern books the last lines, printed in the shape of a geometric figure, chalice, or other form, sometimes constitute the tailpiece.
