(engineering acoustics)
A tape-recording mechanism that is mounted on a motor board, including the tape transport, electronics, and controls, but no power amplifier or loudspeaker.

During my junior year at the University of Kansas, two Lawrence cops burst into my apartment and interrogated my roommates and myself because someone had a tape deck stolen from their car and we were prime suspects.
One way to do this is to use an available tape deck, not necessarily of servo-writer quality, and write adjacent tracks--one of high frequency and one of low frequency.
