telemetryHighly automated communications process by which data are collected from instruments located at remote or inaccessible points and transmitted to receiving equipment for measurement, monitoring, display, and recording. Transmission of the information may be over wires or, more commonly, by radio. The technique is used extensively for oil-pipeline monitoring and control systems and in oceanography and meteorology. Telemetry for rockets and satellites bloomed in the 1950s and has continued to grow in complexity and in breadth of application. Data can be transmitted from inside internal-combustion engines during tests, from steam turbines in operation, and from manned and unmanned spacecraft. Major scientific applications include biomedical research and remote observation of operations with highly radioactive material. telemetry Transmitting data captured by instrumentation and measuring devices to a remote station where it is recorded and analyzed. For example, data from a weather satellite is telemetered to earth.telemetry [tə′lem·ə·trē] (engineering) Telemetry a synonym of “telemetering.” The Russian terms telemetriia and teleizmerenie may both be translated as “telemetry” or “telemetering.” The term telemetriia was borrowed from non-Russian scientific literature and has traditionally been applied to the investigation of biological processes and the measurement of biological indexes at a distance (seeBIOTELEMETRY) and to the measurement and transmission of meteorological data from meteorological balloons or rockets, from artificial earth satellites, or from automatic ground meteorological stations located in relatively inaccessible regions (see). When the points at which measurements are made are distant from the control center, the data are transmitted through radio communication channels; in this case, the term “radio telemetry” is used (seeRADIO REMOTE CONTROL).
