, navigation, and meteorology. It is similar in construction to a surveyor's transit, consisting of a telescope fitted with a spirit level and mounted on a tripod so that it is free to rotate about its vertical and horizontal axes. (Sometimes two or more telescopes of different magnifications are used.) Graduated scales are used to measure the amount of rotation about the axes. Measurements of the altitude and azimuth of a weather balloon weather balloon, balloon used in the measurement and evaluation of mostly upper atmospheric conditions (see atmosphere ). The Military Topographical Service was provided with high-precision radio distance finders, theodolites and other geodetic devices.
Meteorological crews sounded the atmosphere with pilot balloons and manual theodolites and then "cut" ballistic winds on a chart to extract zoned atmospheric information to apply to the gunnery solutions.
The measurement technologies employed include laser-ranging devices, theodolites, large-scale coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), optical- and ultraviolet-light microscopes, scanning electron microscopes (SEMs), atomic force microscopes (AFMs), and scanning tunneling microscopes (STMs).
