(meteorology)

An area of low atmospheric pressure due to high temperatures caused by intensive heating at the earth's surface; common to the continental subtropics in summer, thermal lows remain stationary over the area that produces them, their cyclonic circulation is generally weak and diffuse, and they are nonfrontal. Also known as heat low.
