They collect so-called thermophile microorganisms from the hot springs at Yellowstone National Park and also chemically modify the protein coats of conventional viruses to withstand variations in temperature and acidity. These types of environmental conditions are not conditions in which thermophiles would be expected to grow well. In early studies of rRNA sequences, most thermophiles were noted to have rRNA genes with high GC content relative to mesophiles. |
