| Twenty-seven patients (84%) had asymmetric weakness consistent with a poliomyelitislike syndrome, 4 (13%) had symmetric ascending weakness with sensory abnormalities consistent with the acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy form of Guillain-Barre syndrome, and 1 had scapular winging and shoulder abduction weakness consistent with a long thoracic nerve paralysis. The last chapter deals with more advanced electrophysiologic testing techniques, such as repetitive stimulation studies for neuromuscular junction defects, and less commonly performed nerve conduction studies, such as studies of the long thoracic nerve. Last May, she was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, which is caused by pressure on one of 12 thoracic nerves in the neck that restricts the flow of blood to the wrist and arm. |
