A three-way interaction in a client/server environment, in which the user interface is stored in the client, the bulk of the business application logic is stored in one or more servers, and the data are stored in a database server. See client/server.

To implement multi-tier systems, the Enterprise beans running on a J2EE server is another key technology, which functions as a middle-tier server in a three-tier client/server system.
PS Enterprise has a three-tier client/server architecture with an Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) tier which enables controlled and secure access to the database from different sources, according to the company.
In three-tier client/server systems (Exhibit 2) the application logic (or process) resides in the middle tier; it is separated from the database and user interface.
