Dried and powdered thyroid gland which contains about 0.2% iodine in combination, especially as thyroxine, and is used therapeutically in the treatment of thyroid deficiencies.

Edward Kendall, professor of physiological chemistry at the Mayo Clinic, isolated thyroxine in crystalline form in 1915, and established that the crystalline form had the same effects as the thyroid extract from which it was obtained.
Many patients also take health food supplements, such as tyrosine, kelp, iodine, and possibly thyroid extract, that may influence results of thyroid tests.
Most endocrinologists favor levothyroxine therapy over these combined preparations or thyroid extract, due to its more predictable absorption leading to more stable serum levels, a s well as better standardization of the medication.
