tiltmeter [′tilt‚mēd·ər]
(engineering)
An instrument used to measure small changes in the tilt of the earth's surface, usually in relation to a liquid-level surface or to the rest position of a pendulum.

Scientists at the Institute have deployed hundreds of instruments, such as seismometers to measure earthquakes, and tiltmeters and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) that can detect whether Vesuvius's sides are shifting.
A tiltmeter is placed on a volcano, with one end pointing toward the volcano's cone and the other end pointing away.
Recent eruptions have destroyed the tiltmeters that had been gauging how much the mountain swells and deforms.
