The thrombolytic drug tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA), used for treating stroke, is only available to patients who can be treated within three hours of the onset of a stroke.
The two agents, which were launched in Japan in May 1991, are based on a recombinant tissue plasminogen activator developed by US firm Genentech.
Most strokes result from clots, but only about 1 in 20 patients receives the sole clot-dissolving drug approved for treating stroke, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA).
