tomographyRadiological technique for obtaining clear X-ray images of internal structures by focusing on a specific plane within the body to produce a cross-sectional image. It allows the examination of structures that are obscured by overlying organs and soft tissues and do not show up clearly on conventional X-ray images. See also computerized axial tomography. tomographyAn X-ray technique that shows a single plane (slice) of the object under examination, typically a part of the human body. See CAT scan. Thirty-four of its facilities are multi-modality sites that offer various combinations of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), nuclear medicine, mammography, ultrasound, diagnostic radiology (X-ray) and fluoroscopy. Tomography is the science of reconstructing three-dimensional structures from a set of two-dimensional images--for example, a set of absorption photographs of the same object taken from different angles, using penetrating radiation such as radio waves, x rays, or electron beams. This platform employs powerful mathematical algorithms and computer processors to render a 3-D representation of targeted patient anatomy, using diagnostic imaging data acquired preoperatively from computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or positron-emission tomography (PET) scans. |
