Toning

Toning 

a chemical process that converts a black-and-white print into a monochromatic colored print. One toning method is to convert the silver image into insoluble colored compounds, such as sulfides or selenides. Other methods involve completely or partially replacing the silver with other metals, such as gold or platinum, or adsorbing organic dyes onto the surface of the silver grains.
