We based our study on all tonsillectomies that had been performed at our hospital from January 1990 through December 2001. In the year 1920 alone, the hospital recorded 4,201 X-ray films, 4,317 "ordinary" tooth extractions, and 542 tonsillectomies. A French study of 4,000 children found that 28 percent of children in nonsmoking homes needed tonsillectomies; if one parent smoked, then 41 percent of the children needed such surgery; if both parents smoked, 51 percent of the children required tonsillectomies. |
