Wildlife is a major source of income, either directly for consumptive or productive use value or indirectly for touristic and scientific values (6). Most of the downtown bars are geared toward straight people, they reaffirm straightness and gender roles, and it's a touristic experience for people, a safe experience cast as something exotic and gay that really reflects comforting (straight) gender roles. The title "Universal Experience" suggests the influence of John Urry's 1990 book The Tourist Gaze, which addresses how formerly distinct spaces, institutions, and activities are now increasingly staged and themed to conform to touristic modes of perception, thereby, in Urry's words, "universalizing the tourist gaze. |
