trigger diode [′trigĀ·ər ′dī‚ōd] (electronics) A symmetrical three-layer avalanche diode used in activating silicon-controlled rectifiers; it has a symmetrical switching mode, and hence fires whenever the breakover voltage is exceeded in either polarity.
