triptane [′trip‚tān]
(organic chemistry)
C7H16A hydrocarbon compound made commercially in small quantities, but having one of the highest antiknock ratings known.

Triptane

(2,2,3-trimethylbutane), (CH3)3CCH(CH3)2, an al-kane that exists as a colorless liquid with an odor of camphor. Boiling point, 80.9°C; density, 0.690 g/cm3 at 20°C.

Triptane is virtually insoluble in water. It has a very high octane number (130), and therefore it is used to raise the grade of gasolines. Triptane is present in small amounts in some petroleums and gasoline fractions of petroleum refinery products. It is obtained by the reaction of propylene with isobutane.
