Tropophyte

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus 0.02 sec.
Tropophyte

a plant that inhabits regions marked by the regular alternation of rainy and dry seasons. Tropophytes have adapted to changing conditions of moisture by regulating the water-heat balance. Adaptation mainly involves a change in the surface area of a leaf, which absorbs the sun’s radiation. Such a change may be effected through special leaf orientation, the replacement of large leaves by small ones (seasonal dimorphism), and the discarding of leaves in the unfavorable season. The term “tropophyte” was introduced in 1898 by the German botanist A. Schimper. Tropophytes are found among various life-forms.
