Tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a dry-film lubricant that reportedly provides a lower coefficient of friction than PTFE, molybdenum disulfide, or graphite under most conditions.
Tungsten disulfide might work better than buckyballs, Tenne says, because the larger ball size increases the distance between the metal surfaces.
Because it is an inorganic cage, the tungsten disulfide crystal will likely have properties very different from those of fullernes.
