tunnel junction [′tən·əl ‚jəŋk·shən]
(electronics)
A two-terminal electronic device having an extremely thin potential barrier to electron flow, so that the transport characteristic (the current-voltage curve) is primarily governed by the quantum-mechanical tunneling process which permits electrons to penetrate the barrier.
