turkey vulture

 or turkey buzzard

Species (Cathartes aura) of long-winged, long-tailed vulture (family Cathartidae), about 30 in. (75 cm) long, with dark plumage, whitish beak and legs, bare red head covered with whitish bumps, and a 6-ft (1.8-m) wingspread. It uses its keen sense of smell to find carrion. It occurs throughout the Americas except in northern Canada; the northerly and southernmost populations are migratory.

NAME THOSE VULTURES The Oregon Coast Aquarium is asking the public to help name two turkey vultures that will be featured in a new exhibit opening Oct.
Through his spotting scope he was often able to decide if it was a turkey vulture, which they were not counting, or one of several types of hawks they hoped to add to the count.
A TURKEY vulture was on the loose last night after going missing from a sanctuary at Stonham Aspal, Suffolk.
