Ulama 

(ulema), Muslim theologians and canon lawyers. During the Middle Ages, the ulama presided over Muslim religious institutions, schools, and courts and acted as expounders of Islamic law. They also managed the income derived from the waqfs. Today, the ulama still exercise considerable influence in most countries of the Middle East.

AaSheikh Afif Naboulsi, the head of the south Lebanon Ulama Association, stressed on Friday that Hizbullah's weapons liberated Lebanese rather.
He also underlined that the Muslim Ulama (religious scholars and jurisprudents) bear a heavy responsibility in this regard and can play an important role as the issue pertains to the Muslim world before being an Arab issue.
However, the Governor pointed out, maintenance of law and order is must to ensure accelerated development and urged the tribal elders and ulama to play their due role in this respect so as timely completion of the developmental projects could be made possible.
