ultimate strength [′əl·tə·mət ′streŋkth]
(mechanics)
The tensile stress, per unit of the original surface area, at which a body will fracture, or continue to deform under a decreasing load.

ultimate strength
Of a material in tension, compression, or shear: the maximum value of tension, compression, or shear, respectively, that the material can sustain without failure.
