unilateral tolerance method [¦yü·nə′lad·ə·rəl ′täl·ə·rəns ‚meth·əd]
(design engineering) Method of dimensioning and tolerancing wherein the tolerance is taken as plus or minus from an explicitly stated dimension; the dimension represents the size or location which is nearest the critical condition (that is maximum material condition), and the tolerance is applied either in a plus or minus direction, but not in both directions, in such a way that the permissible variation in size or location is away from the critical condition.
