uninstall
(redirected from uninstalls)

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus 0.01 sec.

To remove hardware or software from a computer system. In order to remove a software application from a PC, an uninstall program, also called an "uninstaller," deletes all the files that were initially copied to the hard disk and restores the AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files if they were modified.

Most applications come with their own uninstall utility. Otherwise, a generic uninstall program can be used to uninstall any application. Such a program must be running when a new application is first installed, because it works by recording all changes made to the computer system.
