(chemical engineering)
Liquid distillation under reduced (less than atmospheric) pressure; used to lower boiling temperatures and lessen the risk of thermal degradation during distillation. Also known as reduced-pressure distillation.

The upgrade also added a 200,000 bpd vacuum distillation unit, a 92,000 bpd catalytic cracking unit and a 26,000 bpd alkylation unit.
There were also plans to shut a 120,000-bpd vacuum distillation unit at its second-largest refinery, the 27,000-bpd plant in Isfahan, for three weeks of maintenance work from early October.
