(engineering) An accelerometer consisting of a differential transformer with three coils and a mass which passes through the coils and is suspended from springs; the center coil is excited from an external alternating-current power source, and two end coils connected in series opposition are used to produce an ac output which is proportional to the displacement of the mass.
