A picture or drawing having self-contained light polarization; at each point of such a picture, one can control the direction and magnitude of polarization, and the image can be expressed as a nonuniform vector field.

During the war, however, Polaroid concentrated on government contracts to develop new products, including specialized optical filters, plastic optics, vectographs for aerial photo interpretation, infrared night adaptation goggles, and even a heat-seeking "smart" aerial bomb to sink naval vessels.
In addition to glasses used by 1939 World's Fair visitors who were introduced to the company's Vectograph system, the precursor to 3D motion pictures, the collection contains some of the first automobile headlights that incorporated polarizing materials, and date to Edwin Land's early years at Polaroid.
During these years, the company conceived, developed, and marketed many new inventions, including optical plastics for military range finders, vectographs (a system using polarized images to visualize objects three-dimensionally), and a new type of heat-homing "smart bomb.
