2. a literary composition that is not in verse but exhibits the intensity of imagination and language common to it

Though Ghosts and Oddities is not a poetry book per se, a number of the vignettes include telegrams, folk songs, correspondence, and other ponderings about ghosts in verse form.
Many of the biographical sketches alternate between standard prose and verse form.
haiku: Japanese verse form that expresses all views of life in 17 syllables (5-7-5); introduced to the wider world by Lafcadio Hearn in the 19th century, haiku has become popular in English and many other languages around the world.
