Verst 

an old Russian measure of length (traveling distance), noted in literary monuments since the 11th century.

The length of the verst changed many times, depending on the number of sazhenia contained in it and on the length of the sazhen’. From the end of the 18th century to the introduction of the metric system, 1 verst = 500 sazhen ’s = 1.0668 km.
