(1) A pre-designed document or data file formatted for common purposes such as a fax, invoice or business letter. If the document contains an automated process, such as a word processing macro or spreadsheet formula, then the programming is already written and embedded in the appropriate places. It becomes a custom document after filling in the blanks with your data. See style sheet and document.

(2) A model of an application that is customized by the system designer. See template-based application.

(3) A plastic or stiff paper form placed over the function keys on a keyboard to identify their use.

template - A document that contains parameters, identified by some special syntax, that are replaced by actual arguments by the template processing system. Where the words in angle brackets are the parameters to be replaced by the name of an actual guest, etc. More sophisticated systems allow repetition, where a section is repeated in a single output document using a list of inputs; conditional sections or (nested) inclusion of other templates. Template 

(1) A flat, two-dimensional scale photographic model of a piece of equipment or an instrument, machine, or structural component. Templates are used in the design of test benches, control boards, and machine tools and in the planning of research and industrial units and complexes, buildings, and installations. The development of designs using templates is called planar breadboarding. In one method of designing using a template, the drawings showing the layout of finished elements are mounted on a raster, which is a scaled grid applied to a transparent film. The use of a template reduces the volume of graphic work, improves the quality, and reduces the time required for design.

(2) In general metallurgy, a flat sample cut out of a metal article or stock and designed for disclosing and studying the macro-structure of the article. For this purpose the template is polished and then etched with solutions of acids and alkalies.

Template 

a thin, transparent plastic sheet with holes whose shapes correspond to topographic symbols, conventional graphic representations of electrical elements, electronic and ion devices, and machine parts and assemblies for communications, remote control, automation, computer technology, and power engineering. A template makes it possible simply to trace the outline of the corresponding hole instead of constructing complex geometric figures. This greatly reduces the time required for graphic work and makes symbols uniform.
