methylcellulose [′meth·əl′sel·yə‚lōs] (organic chemistry) A grayish-white powder derived from cellulose; swells in water to a colloidal solution; soluble in glacial acetic acid; used in water-based paints and ceramic glazes, for leather tanning, and as a thickening and sizing agent, adhesive, and food additive.
