Vitality

in phytocenology, a measure of the extent to which the conditions in a particular biocenosis correspond to the needs of a plant population under study. Possible criteria of vitality are the ability of the individuals of a species to pass through the entire development cycle under the given conditions, the period of maturation of the reproductive organs, the amount of annual growth, and the optimum number of individuals. Vitality is usually rated on a scale of three to five points. Attempts have been made to judge the vitality of a population by finding the vitality of its individuals and then determining the average. In such cases the basis for evaluating vitality is the intensity of manifestation of life, expressed by the body volume or mass, growth energy, or other factors.
