volcanologyor vulcanologyScientific discipline concerned with all aspects of volcanic phenomena. Volcanology deals with the formation, distribution, and classification of volcanoes, as well as their structure and the kinds of materials ejected during an eruption (e.g., lava, dust, ash, and gas). It also involves research on the relationships between volcanic eruptions and other large-scale geologic processes, such as mountain building and earthquakes. One of its chief aims is to determine the nature and causes of volcanic eruptions in order to predict them. Another practical concern is obtaining data that may aid in locating commercially valuable deposits of ores, particularly those of certain metallic sulfides. |

As part of a recent redesign of the Honours Bachelor of Sciences in Geology program, Harold Gibson, professor of Volcanology and Ore Deposits, is looking to provide an opportunity for students to emerge into the workforce with actual experience. This set the groundwork for the years following the black smoker discovery when an understanding of the link between physical volcanology and ore deposition rapidly became an indispensable guide for finding volcanic centres and distinguishing different families of deposits (Dimroth et al. Content covers such topics as tectonics, computational methods for quantitative analysis, modeling, collaborative systems for sharing data, data analysis, data integration, and new developments in such fields as archeology, geophysics, volcanology and geology. |
