synchronized swimmingSwimming sport in which the movements of one or more swimmers are synchronized with a musical accompaniment. The sport developed in the U.S. in the 1930s and was admitted as an Olympic event (solo and duet only) in 1984; in 1996 the rules were changed to allow only teams of eight women. Local dancers shared the stage with professionals from Miami (including Susan Bello, pictured above in Don Quixote) in two premieres by resident choreographer Frank Galvez: Rhapsody, set to George Gershwin music and inspired by water ballet star Esther Williams; and It's What We Feel, with songs by Frank Sinatra. The party, held literally in and around the hip and trendy Tropicana pool, featured a synchronized swimming team, clad in ``E-kinis,'' performing water ballet to Queen's ``We Will Rock You. Two other creative fundraising activities, the Dry Water Ballet and the Pepsi/Pick Quik promotion, brought in thousands of dollars. |
