The water rail is a migratory bird. In the USSR it nests in the southern and central band from the western border to Primor’e; it winters in Transcaucasia and the south of Middle Asia. The bird lives in reed thickets near bodies of water. There are 6-10 mottled eggs in a clutch. The water rail is nocturnal and feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates.

Visitors to RSPB Conwy had great views of a water rail bathing for almost two hours - it is one of the best places to see these secretive birds.
On the river, visitors can expect to see cormorant, goosander, common tern, goldeneye and grey heron, while at the pond you may see coot, mallard, moorhen or, if you are lucky, a water rail.
If S Macdonald wants to kill the sparrowhawks, because they kill small birds, then why not kill all cuckoos, woodpeckers, herons, harriers, kestrels, falcons, water rails, skuas, gulls, corvids, owls and shrikes, all of which feed on birds, and while you are at it, why not kill all stoats, weasels and pine martens, which also kill birds and red squirrels.
