weatherboard
the windward side of a vessel

weatherboard
One of a number of horizontal boards commonly used as an exterior covering on timber-framed buildings to provide weather protection; for example, used as exterior sheathing to protect the infilling between the structural timbers. The upper edges of weatherboards are commonly tapered to a thinner edge than the lower edge so they can be overlapped by the weather-boards directly above them, or they have a rabbeted upper edge that fits under the overlapping board above, to shed water. Also see clapboards, which served the same purpose but were usually not as thick as weatherboards; also siding.

A small addition will be made this week to England's treasury of listed buildings: a tiny oak weatherboarded structure, which speaks of a rural past ignored by costume dramas, a time when parents and child could sit down peacefully together and let nature take its course.
But until I stood on the sloping terrace of a large and weatherboarded house, its windows hidden by heavy pinewood shutters and the whole building covered in early morning mist, I hadn't realised how remote it's possible to be.
This year we will be building a weatherboarded, oak-framed garage to showcase on our stand.
