Wheatworm

(Anguina tritici), a parasitic roundworm of the family Anguinidae that causes gall formation in the spikes of wheat, rye, barley, oats, and a number of wild grasses. The galls, which are smaller than the grains, are hard to the touch and brown. They contain a loose, white mass consisting of thousands of larvae. Before the 1940’s the wheatworm was widely distributed. It caused serious damage in many regions of the USSR before the prohibition in 1937 against sowing seeds contaminated by galls. The wheatworm has been practically eliminated in the USSR.
