window manager

Software incorporated into all popular GUIs that displays a window with accompanying menus, buttons and scroll bars. It allows the windows to be relocated, overlapped, resized, minimized and maximized. See desktop manager.


(operating system)window manager - A part of a window system which arranges windows on a screen. It is responsible for moving and resizing windows, and other such functions common to all applications.

Examples from the X Window System are twm, gwm, olwm.
